Two Use Cases. One System.

Post-Process

Recover N&P from digestate or manure, eliminate transport, create fertilizer revenue.

Mid-Process

Strip ammonia during co-digestion prevent inhibition, cut dilution, lower haulage.

Use Case 1 Post-Process

Getting Rid of Digestate

The Problem

Across Europe, soil saturation and the EU Nitrates Directive mean spreading is a compliance issue, not just a cost one. Operators face long-distance transport, rising costs and rising emissions.

The Solution

Up to 90% N&P recovered as ASL (N) and mineral phosphorus concentrate (P). If desired, we take over the distribution of the fertilizer products in exchange for the cost of the chemicals used. The treated digestate is always suitable for local disposal, but with only one tenth of the original N/P load it becomes up to 10x more compliant with nitrogen and phosphorus regulations, cutting haulage costs to roughly a tenth.

What You Get

  • Up to 90% N&P recovery
  • ASL (N) + mineral P concentrate
  • 10x easier compliance with local N/P disposal regulations
  • Haulage eliminated or reduced

Commercial Terms

  • Varea offtakes products directly
  • Varea fully finances the plant
  • Fixed monthly rental
  • 3rd party maintenance included
Use Case 2 Mid-Process

Protecting Digester Performance

The Problem

Co-digesting nitrogen-rich feedstocks like chicken manure causes ammonia inhibition worsening with recirculation. Dilution with water increases digestate volume and haulage costs.

The Solution

Ammonia stripping mid-process removes excess nitrogen before inhibitory levels stabilising digestion, improving biogas output, and eliminating the need for dilution.

  • Reduced dilution requirement
  • Lower digestate volumes
  • Recovered N as sellable fertilizer
  • 10x easier compliance with local N/P disposal regulations

  • 3.5 kWh-e per m³. No thermal energy required.

Energy consumption is a fraction of evaporation-based alternatives where energy alone costs around 12 EUR per m³.

  • Industry-grade ASL output

Acid costs scale with ammonia levels, up to ~€4 per m³ for the highest ammonia content we have encountered. A lower-grade product significantly undermines the economics, since the recovered fertilizers are what offset the chemicals consumed.

  • Up to 90% nitrogen and phosphorus recovery

    Only otherwise achievable through evaporation.

  • Membranes that do not clog

High downtime is a fundamental problem of hot-stripping technologies. Our hydrophobic separation membranes operate at only 0.1 bar hydraulic pressure and only allow gaseous ammonia to pass through, not the digestate itself. This means they require no cleaning or backflushing and have service lives of up to several years.

Who This Is For

Biogas operators co-digesting nitrogen-rich feedstocks, operators with ammonia inhibition or recirculation N buildup, and agricultural operators in spreading-restricted regions. Key markets: DE, AT, CH, NL, DK.
